Movie Report

Rakta Charitra directed by Ram Gopal Verma is not just a film, its a most violent film of Hindi cinema so far. Ram Gopal Varma once again presents a gritty tale, full of bloodshed after his previous films Satya and Company. The film is based on a true story and not for those who are weak hearted.

Narasimha Reddy is a powerful politician in Aanandapuram of Andhra Pradesh. He is a reasonable guy and he wants to distribute the power that is dominated by Reddy's to another group that is economically backward. He asks his lieutenant Veerabhadrayya (Rajebdra Gupta) to take over the responsibility of nominating candidates from the other caste.

Nagamani Reddy (Kota Srinivasa Rao) who don't like the other caste people to come up poisons the mind of Narasimha Reddy. Hurt by the sudden turnaround of Narasimha Reddy, Veerabhadrayya starts his own faction to contest in elections. In the process Narasimha Reddy kills Veerabhadrayya and his elder son Shankar (Sushant Singh). Pratap Ravi (Vivek Oberoi) who is never interested in the disputes has no option left now but for wage a war against the family of Narasimha Reddy.

The rest of the story is all about how he fights and kills the family members of Narasimha Reddy and how he climbs up the ladder to become an alternate system using the political support given by Shivaji Rao (Shatrughna Sinha).

Performance wise, Vivek Oberoi is perfect for his role. He is super efficient. Shatrughan Sinha is remarkable. He enacts his role with amazing ease. Abhimanyu Singh is brilliant. Rajendar Gupta and Sushant Singh are okay. Radhika Apte is fine. Ashwini Kalsekar is excellent. Zarina Wahab is top notch. Sudeep and Darshan Jariwala are wasted. Ashish Vidyarthi, Anupam Shyam, Sushmita Mukherjee, Vishwajeet Pradhan and Kota Srinivasa Rao shine in their respective parts.

On the whole, Rakta Charitra is an extremely violent film. The film is actually for those who love to watch aggression, violence, bloodshed and brutality on the silver screen. Strictly not recommended for families, women, children and those who are faint-hearted.

Shankar (Manoj Bajpai), the local goldsmith, is head-over-heels in love with his neighbour's daughter Suvarnalata (Aarti Chhabria) much to the chagrin of her father Daya Shastri (Dilip Prabahvalkar). Shastri is bent upon finding her a suitable groom from Dubai and cover her with gold at the wedding, which will help him climb up the social ladder. Armed with nothing but a heart of pure gold, Shankar sets out to overcome the obstacles of devious plots and heartache. Dus Tola, a slice-of-life tale which mirrors our society, and is light-hearted in its narrative.

Peepli Live is an upcoming Hindi film which is produced by Aamir Khan. A satire on the farmers' suicides and subsequent media and political response, Peepli Live competed in the Sundance Film Festival, the first film from India to achieve this feat. However due to the offensive language in the movie, it got an 'A' adult certificate in India. The movie was picked up by specialty German distribution company Rapid Eye Movies for a special screening at the Berlin International Film Festival. Housefull is a 2010 Bollywood comedy film directed by Sajid Khan and starring Akshay Kumar as the lead protagonist role while Deepika Padukone, Lara Dutta, Jiah Khan, Ritesh Deshmukh and Arjun Rampal feature in supporting roles. Boman Irani and Randhir Kapoor also play important supporting roles in the film. Jacqueline Fernandez has a special appearance in the film. The film was shot over several months in London and Italy. The film is said to be a remake of 1998 Tamil film Kaathala Kaathala. The film was released across more than 750 screens in India.

The first half spends considerable time developing the character of Aarush (Akshay Kumar), whom we see leaving his job to go back to stay with his best buddy Bob (Ritesh Deshmukh) and his wife Hetal (Lara Dutta), two casino employees in London. Aarush's unwelcome gatecrash turns the life of the couple upside down with his bad luck rubbing off into their home.

Bob and Hetal set him up with their boss's daughter Devika (Jiah Khan), and it seemed like the perfect match of a traditional Indian boy and girl. However, a surprise emerges while the newlyweds travel to an Italian resort for their honeymoon. A final plea to God leads to Aarush meets up with his One True Love with Saundariya Bhagyalakshmi Venkateshwari Baassappa Rao, aka Sandy (Deepika Padukone). (Chunky Pandey), playing the hotel owner Akhri Pasta, adds to the farcical comedy with a penchant of lying and construing them as jokes, with one key lie being the cause for a running gag for Aarush being hurried away from the scene by Bob and Hetal each time Devika is sighted.

The story is about pretenses, and how in the name of saving one's face and reputation, lies lead to bigger lies, stemming from wanting to impress family members. For Hetal, she has consistently told that she's married to a rich boy and living it up in a big mansion, doing so to impress her dad (Boman Irani) who has frowned upon her decision to stay in London with Bob. For Sandy, her lie involves something similar to her brother Major Krishna Rao (a stoic faced Arjun Rampal) whom she thinks will frown upon her relationship with the loser Aarush, and hence both couples have set the tone for the second half after the interval, playing on the theme and rationale of being perfectly OK to lie if it's done for a noble cause, the definition of noble being quite narrow and for personal benefit.

The movie opens with John Tyree, a young soldier from the Army Special Forces, lying on the ground in his army gear with gunshot wounds. Coins begin to fall over him as he remembers a childhood trip to the U.S. Coin mint. He goes on to state that he is a coin in the United States of America's army, and that the last thing he thought about before he blacked out, was you.

In 2001, college student Savannah Lynn Curtis (Amanda Seyfried) is on spring break when she meets John Tyree (Channing Tatum), a young soldier on leave from the Army Special Forces. In a matter of days, Savannah and John fall in love. John meets Savannah's family as well as her neighbor Tim and Tim's autistic son who looks up to Savannah, Alan. Savannah meets John's father, who is only interested in his coin collection, but still befriends her. John explains to Savannah that his father has always been obsessed with coins, and has not been much of a father to John since John's mother left. Savannah mentions John's father may, like Alan, have autism, causing John to become upset and believe Savannah is calling his father retarded. He also gets into a fight with Savannah's rich neighbor and accidentally punches Tim in the process. John apologizes to Tim the next day and leaves Savannah a note, seeking her forgiveness before his leave comes to an end. Savannah gets the note, and they spend one last day together. John returns to the army and he and Savannah begin a long distance relationship through handwritten letters. John believes that year will be his final year of enlistment, but, following the September 11 attacks, is torn between returning home and his sense of duty. He is given eighteen hours off, which he spends with Savannah and her family as well as with his father. He asks Savannah for her opinion on whether or not he should reenlist, and she tells him to do what he feels is right. Like the rest of the soldiers in his unit, John chooses to reenlist.

Over the next seven years, John faces increasingly dangerous missions and begins to live almost entirely for Savannah's letters. However, John and Savannah find themselves drifting apart. Finally, Savannah, sad but resigned, sends John a Dear John letter, informing him that she has become engaged to someone else. John is deeply depressed and frustrated and believes she is engaged to her rich neighbor. On a mission, he enters a dangerous area and is shot several times by an enemy. His captain suggests that John go home and spend time with his father, but John, still upset about Savannah, chooses to reenlist again. He decides that he will make a career of the Army and stay enlisted for as long as possible. He is informed after another mission that he is being sent home, because his father has had a stroke. He spends the last few days of his father's life by his side, and writes him a letter. His father has difficulty opening it, so John reads it to him. It is then that the viewers find out that when John's speech at the beginning of the film addressed his father, not Savannah. He and his father connect in a tearful moment, and his father passes. John decides to go see Savannah, and discovers she married Tim, not her rich friend. Savannah tells him Tim has cancer, and is not allowed to leave the hospital. She says that the only way he can come home is by having a operation that they cannot afford. John visits Tim in the hospital and leaves Savannah. John then sells his father's coin collection and donates the money anonymously to finance Tim's operation so that Tim may spend his last moments with his family. In the last scene of the film, John sees Savannah on the street and they embrace.

Plot:
The film begins with the child, Rizwan Khan (Tanay Chheda), a Muslim who has Asperger syndrome, growing up with his mother (Zarina Wahab) in the Borivali section of Mumbai.Later as an adult (Shahrukh Khan), Rizwan moves to San Francisco and lives with his brother and sister-in-law. While there, he falls in love with Mandira (Kajol). They eventually marry and begin a business.

After the events of 9/11, Rizwan and Mandira begin to face a number of difficulties. Following a tragedy, they separate. In order to win her back, Rizwan embarks on a long journey across the United States.

Notes During the filming of one of the scenes of a train robbery sequence in Rajasthan, Bunny Anand and Vicky Mehra were riding their respective horses and Salman was balancing himself keeping one leg each on the two horses. They were followed by many more horse riders with a train fast approaching to their left. Bunny lost his balance and was about to fall off the horse he was riding but Salman's quick thinking and good physical fitness saved his life as Salman pulled him up by his collar while in a tricky position himself. If Vicky had fallen off not only he himself but even Salman would have got seriously injured. But it all ended well with Salman earning praises of Vicky and the entire cast and crew of the film. Reports of the film being stalled are obviously not true since recently a dance number picturized on Lisa Lazarus, Miss Universe UK 2008, was recorded in the Film City studios. (Dec 9)

Its been reported in the media that Veer is stalled due to the bad market conditions. (Nov 13)

Makers of Salman Khan starrer Veer have been offered bank busting Rs 150 crore for the film which is still under production, but they are playing it cool because the price is likely to go even higher! (Aug 28)

Salman Khan recently filmed a song and dance sequence for the film that cost the film makers a whopping Rs 3.5 crore, making it the most expensive song ever filmed. The song ‘Taali mar’ is written by Gulzar, composed by Sajid-Wajid and sung by Sonu Nigam, Sukhvinder Singh and Wajid. Apart from Salman, Mithun and Sohail are also part of the song. It featured close to 650-700 junior artists, most of them in a Pathani makeover! It took around 11 days to complete the song shoot. (Aug 27)

A Katrina Kaif look-alike is the lead actress in the film. Her name has not been revealed to the media yet.

Shooting is scheduled to begin in August for release next summer. Salman Khan is reportedly promoting Katrina Kaif's 17-year-old sister Isabel for a lead role in the film. Priyanka Chopra is also interested in playing lead.

Salman Khan is on the lookout for a new face to play lead in the film. At one point, it was reported that Priyanka maybe offered the lead.

The film is budgeted at Rs 75 crore. Salman is reportedly charging Rs 25 crore for the film.

The story of the film was written by Salman Khan over a few years.
